Under the suffering humanitarian conditions in Yemen, families are exposed to multiple crises, including high levels of food insecurity, economic deterioration, disease outbreaks, and conflict. Many people had to reduce the quantity or quality of the food they consume, to survive. In many cases, families are forced to do both. On the grounds of this, Malnutrition cases are threateningly increasing amongst children under the age of five (U5), and pregnant and lactating women (PLW).
In a small village in Al Mahabishah district of Hajjah governorate, where people are struggling to meet their basic needs, YFCA team met the child Hisham. Hisham is 24 months- a boy who lives with his parents and his three brothers who were diagnosed with a seizure disorder. Shortly, before Hisham’s birth, one of his brothers had passed away from epilepsy. "by the time I gave birth to Hisham, I was still grieving the loss of my elder son, thus I could not take a good care of him as a newborn” the Mother said in tears. Owing to the father's low income and Hisham’s brother's illness, the parents could not afford a healthy diet for their children. When Hisham become almost two years old, his mother noticed that her son was frail, lethargic, and has stunting growth for a child of two years old. Therefore, she was concerned that she might lose another child of her own. To save her son’s life, she decided to take him to Bani Jumaie health center where YFCA in cooperating with WFP is implementing the promotion of preventive and lifesaving nutrition interventions. After screening, Hisham was enrolled in TSFP program with a MUAC screening of 11.7 cm, he spent three months receiving therapeutic nutrition. The health status of Hisham got improved, “after months of watching our son constantly tired and exhausted to the level that he can't play like other children in his age, today we can finally see him vital and energetic. Watching your son playing with the happiness on his face, is one of life's greatest pleasures” Said Hisham’s father.
Hisham’s parents thanked YFCA and WFP for the provided assistance, and show their appreciation to the health workers and YFCA team who are eagerly working for a healthier future.
