By providing operational support with 72,000 liters of fuel to four water supply systems for 12 months, safe drinking water becomes easily accessible to 25,000 Individuals / 1986 households in Jardan, Nisab & Ataq districts of Shabwah Governorate, Yemen.

Providing operational support with fuel to water supply systems in many villages is one of the most needed interventions that touch people’s lives directly and provide direct assistance to solve one of the most important obstacles facing the residents and threaten the stability of their daily life. The residents of the chosen villages, that were supported with fuel, were suffering from severe water scarcity. This caused a serious struggle for hundreds of families to reach and bring clean water from unprotected wells or buy it at a high cost that could not be affordable for them. Therefore, YFCA had coordinated with the General Authority for Rural Water and Sanitation Project (GARWASP) in Shabwah governorate to nominate the water supply systems (wells) that are in need of operational support (fuel) within the targeted districts of the project. Hence, four water supply systems have been selected to be supplied with operational support (fuel) in three districts, which are (Al-Hanak well in Nisab district, Al-Awsha well in Ataq district and Al-Shula well & Al-Shaq well in Jardan districts).

An interview was conducted with the head of the Community Committee (CC) of Al-Shula well, Mr. Abdullah Ali Al-Hotaf, as he indicated that such interventions solve problems incurred by the poor citizens in the area. Also, he mentioned that people in the village were suffering from lack of water before the intervention, as the operational rate of the well does not exceed ten days per month. Consequently, this forced the citizens to choose one of the two decisions, either afford the cost of getting water through water trucking with an amount of 15,000 Yemeni riyals per house, or fetching water from a distant place called (creef), which is a pit gathers undrinkable water. Mr. Al-Hotaf mentioned "We noticed that some people use polluted water! What can they do? Not all the citizens are able to afford the costs of buying safe and clean water!

In addition, Mr. Al-Hotaf was grateful for YFCA’s intervention, as he indicated that water is reaching every house sufficiently on daily basis. "On behalf of all citizens, I thank YFCA and all the partners and donors of this project for helping and supporting us,” he said expressing his gratitude. “We suggest that the operational support of the well be changed from diesel support to solar panels to ensure the continuity of operating the well without any requiring of the in-kind support.” Mr. Al-Hotaf added.

On the other hand, an interview was conducted with one of the people of concern, Mr.Hassan Bin Ali Al-Buraiki, a head of a family and a father of three children. He expressed his happiness for the easy access to water during the project period and said: “I have no need to pay a lot of money to buy water after YFCA’s intervention, as well as my kids and I are no longer have to walk for long miles to get jerry cans filled with unsafe and pulloted water. The water never cuts anymore, this helped me to get rid of one of my biggest burdens that I am facing”

Such activities and projects contribute significally in concurring people’s obstacles and sufferage and support them with their basic rights and daily essential requirements. They also prove people that we are here to support everyone who struggle.
