“I was terrified when I heard that loud sound next to me, the pressure of the explosion had pushed us away. I immediately covered my child with my body, I felt her body was shaking.” Lamia said

Bait Al-Faqih Hospital is an obstetric emergency department that offers various maternal, newborn, and RH services (Antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, normal delivery & C-section). The UNFPA intervention over this health facility began on July 2018, through YFCA as an implementing partner. This service aims to take more effective measures to address maternal and infant mortality.
Lamia is 26 years old and from Al-Hodeidah governorate was in the seventh month of her pregnancy. One day, while she was going to collect firewood with her three-year-old daughter and her neighbor, a mine explosion happened 3 km away from them. Lamia saw death with her own eyes. She fell on the ground while she was covering her daughter as an attempt to protect her child and her fetus. This led to a placenta separation from the uterine wall.
This type of abruption (Placenta abruption) can cause severe bleeding during the pregnancy. Moreover, if a pregnant woman experienced a placental abruption, it can cause problems for the baby including growth issues, preterm birth or stillbirth.
Fortunately, her neighbor was with her, as she called Lamia’s husband to rescue them. He came immediately and took them to the nearest hospital, Bait Al-Faqih Hospital. She was diagnosed with placental abruption, which necessitated a cesarean to save her and her infant’s lives.
After the surgery, her doctor stated,” Lamia and her infant were very lucky for their fast arrival.”. “She would be followed up until she gets discharged from the hospital.” She Added.
