Yemen has been hfacing water scarcity. Before and after the current war and situation, Yemen was considered one of the world’s most severely water-scarce countries. Hence, this situation has even got worse after the recent incidents and conflicts. Less than half of the population has access to safe water sources, with severe effects on people’s health, agriculture, and livelihoods. For many communities in Yemen, drinking unsafe water is the only choice, as potable water is inaccessible and unaffordable.
Yemen’s ongoing conflicts had pushed the community of Shabwah governorate to undertake extreme measures to deal with water shortage. The residents were given limited access to water as the head of the water management committee of Wasit well explained that "people were not drinking water because the wells were open and definitely were contaminated with germs and chemicals at high enough levels to make the residents get epidemics. Also, the water had not reached all people due to the reduction of the operating period".
Shabwah governorate is experiencing one of the world’s extremest water crises. Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) needs have significantly increased due to the destruction of infrastructure, large-scale displacements, water mismanagement and impacts of climate change. As the head of the water management committee of Al-Hanak well indicated that "the wells of the area are contaminated and unused due to the high costs of the fuel to operate the pumps. Therefore, most of the people fetch water from wells that are located far away from the area".
Also, one of the beneficiaries of Wasit area expressed that "I and many people here suffer from the lack of water, and we had to buy water from far places to get safe and clean water despite the lack of sufficient amount of money".
Recognizing these complecated factors require a rapid response. Therefore, Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) successfully completed the rehabilitation of three water assets in two districts, Nisab and Markha Al-Sufla districts, Shabwah governorate. By Rehabilitating three water assets and providing them with solar system and auto-chlorination device. Drinking safe water became easily accessible to 22,500 individuals in Wasit, Al-Hanak and Al-Karmoom Al-Madid areas in Nisab and Markha Al-Sufla districts, respectively.
When the head of the water management committee of Wasit well was asked about his satisfaction with this intervention, he replied that "the residents and I are absolutely satisfied. As I am a head of a water management committee, I can say that all our faced problems regarding the lack of water have ended".
The intervention aimed to improve easy access to safe and clean potable water to thousands of inhabitants from the local communities and IDPs. A member of the targeted communities in Al-Karmoom Al-Madid area expressed his happiness for the intervention and said "I cannot be happier, having easy access to safe water was a dream that was hard for us to reach. Our situation changed radically. Now, I feel safe that we use water at home and it is accessable at any time. Moreover, all the costs of water were reduced, and the water has become ssuitable for drinking after covering the well and providing a chlorine device".
The solar power plant is a great idea since using a green energy source does not harm the environment. The main reason that motivated us to succeed and complete this project was the vulnerability of the community, and YFCA is committed to keep increasing access to safe drinking water amongst the underprivileged.
