Asma is a girl who lives in Bait Humran village, Al-Rajm district of Al-Mahwit governorate. Bait Humran is one of the rugged mountainous areas in Al-Mahwit governorate, as the inhabitants have to walk for four hours to reach the nearest paved road. The residents of this village are facing difficult living conditions in all life’s aspects. Agriculture and grazing are the main sources of income in the area, where corn grains are grown just once a year, and all members of this community males and females of different ages work in agriculture and livestock. From different prospection, the basic services are lacking in the area, such as access to water, food, and electricity accessibility. A school and health unit were built through the efforts of the residents.

As the case with most families in Beit Hamran, the deteriorating economic situation made Asma’s family live in difficult living conditions, where her father works for a daily wage. Regarding to these conditions the food security and the health concerning approach within the family were neglected. Hence, Asma suffered from many health issues such as a loss of appetite with lethargy, lack of movement, and weak body resistance, which exposed her to be frequently affected by infectious diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia. On the other hand, Asma’s family cannot afford to take their child to the health center in order to present her case to a pediatrician to find out the reasons for the deterioration of her health.

During YFCA’s implementation of the affected cases with malnutrition assessment in Al-Rajm district, Asma’s MUAQ measurement indicated 11cm which reflects Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
Immediately, the nutritional health workers at the health unit gave her therapeutic feeding and explained the use methodology to her mother. The case was followed up continuously, including awareness sessions to the mother as to clarify for her the reasons that lead to malnutrition and the importance of commitment to take the prescribed therapy on a daily basis.” I was so concerned about my daughter’s health condition. Now, after the awareness that I received everything turned out.” Asma’s mother gratefully stated. The situation continued for several months until Asma recovered. She eventually reached a normal weight, and her MUAQ at the time she was discharged from the health center indicated 13.5 cm which is the measurement of no acute malnutrition.
