Eiadh Health Center in Jardan district is one of the health centers that receives huge number of affected people by the spread of diseases and epidemics transmitted through water and air or direct contact. Because of the lack of capabilities in this small center, it serves approximately 8350 households, with medical and non-medical staff who are not exceeding 16 members. According to the information received from the administration of the health center during the initial survey to select the areas of intervention, the center was receiving a high number of diarrhea, dengue and viral fevers cases. The staff was working hard to handle such a number of cases. According to the center’s statement, the diarrhea cases record hit 170 cases in one month (before the intervention), where 30 cases of dengue reached the health center in the same period.
Based on this, the intervention of the hygiene promotion awareness sessions was highly needed. Hence, 200 awareness sessions were conducted intensively in Jardan district to raise the community’s awareness of diseases, convey ways of transmission and how to deal with them properly. The targeted population was also illuminated on how to prepare oral rehydration solution (ORS) at home, and its indications. In the meantime, there was also a great emphasis on the proper water storage and purification methods to reduce the number of waterborne diseases infected cases. To simulate the idea for the beneficiaries, personal hygiene kits were distributed as well as ceramic filters for the infected cases with SAM, MAM & PLW[1], to ensure that they have access to clean water and to reduce the percentage of water-borne diseases.
Regarding this intervention, one of the doctors at the Eiadh Health Center stated "We found a great impact from the awareness sessions on the residents. Furthermore, the number of diarrhea and viral fevers cases have decreased significantly, which led to low pressure on the health center and give us the ability to focus on new and more severe cases.” He also said that "There is a noticeable difference in the proportion of diarrhea and dengue cases received by the center. For example, this month, dengue cases did not exceed 5 cases!"
