“When they informed me about the assistance, my body was shaking and my eyes teared up from happiness. Never in my life had I dreamt of handling such a huge amount of money since long ago”, Fatima said beamingly

Fatima, a 54-years-old woman from Al-Hudaidah Governorate, is a mother of 4 boys and 1 girl, and a grandmother of 5 kids. Before the current war took place, Fatima was working as a shepherd, living happily with her children and her grandchildren in a safe area. We were living in our house having the ability to afford all our basic needs” Fatima stated. As the conflict started and escalated, she was gripped by the fear of losing one of her children or her grandchildren. The cries of her grandchildren forced her to flee to Batees an IDP hosting site in Kanfar area, Abyan governorate, searching for a safe shelter for her frightened children.

Life was very tough for Fatima, a widow who earned her family’s living dues from collecting firewood. The thought of sending her children to school was more like a dream, which has never gotten a probability to manifest.
Her only daughter, who is 27 years old, got married and divorced at an early age and did not manage to go to school, which Fatima deeply regrets. The income earned from firewood gathering and occasional support from close relatives was insufficient to cover the education fees of her younger children.

The quality of Fatima’s and her children’s life deteriorated further when accessing to basic food needs became a massive hurdle as rising prices rendered them unaffordable. The only external support she previously received on an irregular basis was food aid. Fortunately, she was registered for the provision of immediate life-saving emergency food assistance to the most vulnerable acutely in-secured IDPs, which was funded by YHF and implemented by YFCA. Hence, her situation began to improve when she became among the first beneficiaries to receive cash assistance for 6 rounds.

She used some of the money to pay off debts accumulated over the past five years and cleared school fees for her two young sons and three of her grandchildren. Fatima was able to purchase uniforms and other school-related essentials as well. She also managed to use some of the money to stock food and boost her household’s food security. The assistance received helped her in renovating the roof of her hut which had deteriorated over the years and was leaking during rainy seasons. Most notably, Fatima bought a donkey to facilitate her work as a firewood collector and improve her livelihood. “It is so happy seeing my mother smiles again” Fatima’s daughter stated gratefully.
