More and more women are choosing to give birth at home

More and more women are choosing to give birth at home
Sunday, 02 October, 2022

Cultural constraints in Yemen favoring unassisted home birth, including the traditional way of delivery using the help of midwives, inhibiting the utilization of maternal health services. Although planned home births are associated with a higher risk of infant’s and mother’s death, many women prefer home birth because they feel it is more natural and less stressful.
Tayseer Mohsen, 35 years old and a mother of two children, has been one of those affected by the home delivery approach. After the delivery of her baby at home, Tayseer suffered from severe bleeding which resulted in tachycardia, depressed respiration and loss of her consciousness. Immediately, her husband took her and their fetus to the nearest hospital, Al-Thawra Hospital.
The obstetric emergency center in Al-Thawra Hospital, Al-Hawk district of Al-Hudaydah governorate offers variety of maternal, newborn, and RH services (Antenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, normal delivery). The UNFPA intervention has begun in September 2018 through YFCA as an implementing partner. The services aim to take more effective measures to address maternal and infant mortality.
Tayseer reached the hospital in critical condition with very low blood pressure due to the severe hemorrhage.  Adding to this, her fetus was not in a good condition. “We live in a place where there are no clinics. During her pregnancy, she hasn’t visited any health facility. She suffered from pain and bleeding postpartum all at once, which led to loss of consciousness.” her husband mentioned.
Once Tayseer reached the hospital, she was resuscitated and the specialist was able to control the bleeding. During that time, the child was examined and his condition necessitated his entrance to the nursery. After a week of intensified health care and follow-up over the case of Tayseer and her child, they got discharged in good health, happiness overwhelms her and her family as there are no words able to thank all the staff of Al-Thawra Hospital.
