Away from the center of the city Al-Rayyan village locates, a rural area in Khab wa Ash Sha’af district of Al Jawf governorate. As is the case with the inhabitants of the rural areas, residents of Al-Rayyan tend to have limited access to healthy and nutritious food. Furthermore, the escalation of the conflict in the area has left people teetering on the brink of severe malnutrition.
Beer Al Mazariq is one of the health units where YFCA in cooperation with WFP is implementing the promotion of preventive and life-saving nutrition intervention project. Due to the prolonged armed conflict, and out of a strong desire to help those in dire need, YFCA had to make a decision to transfer the provided service from Bir al-Maraziq to Al-Rayyan camp, Al-Mashram, where many displaced people were forced to leave their homes as the area is no longer safe for them. It was necessary to take such a decision in order to be able to provide therapeutic nutrition services to those affected by malnutrition and displacement, even if it was through a small tent in the middle of the desert.
To deliver the assistance to the most vulnerable children and pregnant/ lactating women, YFCA had to transport the commodities for 300km through the desert where the transporter passes through several districts, as there were no direct roads bridging the warehouse to the camp. Not to mention the difficulties and challenges that our team faced to get the required permissions for transporting the commodities. “Neither the long-distance nor the security checkpoints that follow different parties will stop us from helping our people” the coordinator determinedly said
Since the beginning of the project, YFCA has reached 170 beneficiaries; 81 pregnant and lactating women, and 88 children under the age of five years old, and will continue to provide support to those who need it the most, regardless of all the obstacles. ‘I couldn’t be more appreciated for the provided services. People in the camp may have lost their homes, but at least they have got a chance to keep their children healthy’ one of the village’s inhabitants gratefully mentioned.
