Ali was not the only victim of the cholera epidemic in the village of Beit Qatina. Most of the villagers were infected with the disease, including his father. Ali was also not an ordinary boy. The 15-year-old is suffering from atrophy in the brain, which means he needs treatment of a special kind.
“After suffering from cholera, his condition was very difficult and he was transferred to the health center for treatment of acute watery diarrhea which was supervised by the Yemen Family Care Association In our village to cope with the epidemic.” Stated Ali’s Father
The condition of the young boy deteriorated significantly and he was imbedded for a whole week receiving treatment at the Health Center. His condition (cerebral hemorrhage) had a clear negative impact on the course of his treatment against cholera. Due to the difficulty of controlling his emotions and actions which caused further burden on his family and specialists in the health center who had a challenging time to save Ali’s life in the end. Thanks to their efforts, Ali returned home intact, healthy and cholera free.
When we went to visit him, with the doctors and health workers to his home not too long after his recovery, we witnessed through his innocent, hope filled laughter a sense of trust and recognition for those who made great efforts to treat him. A defining moment was clear in his wandering glances gratitude was clearly communicated, telling them “thank you for all you’ve done for me” and in a moment he was gone back to his own world..
