Sa’adah / Ketaf / Nutrition: Al-Sahlain Health Center in Kataf district
"Radhia" is a two-year baby girl from the people of the governorate of Sa’adah. She was treated for malnutrition at Al Sahlain Medical Center in the Ketaf district - the only center of its kind in the district that is supported by the Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) as part of the project funded by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). The diagnosis of the medical staff about her case showed her suffering from acute malnutrition which required a quick treatment and special attention, which was for five months, after which returned to normal life.
Her mother and family have suffered also for being so poor to bear the cost of her treatment until YFCA has supported Al Sahlain Health Centre via the subject of “Provision of multi-sectorial integrated nutrition, health and WASH services at Almahabeshah and Mabyan districts of Hajjah Governorate and Munabeh and Kitaf Wa Al Boqe’e of Saadah governorate” funded by Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF) /OCHA. YFCA has rehabilitated the only health center in Ketaf which has been out of work and abandoned for several years. The support included providing the center with a fully qualified medical staff, in addition to providing the necessary medicines, health and laboratory equipment to enable the center to provide all services to the vulnerable communities in the targeted area who are around thirty thousand people representing the catchment area of the Ketaf district.
Radhia’s mother says that the suffering of her baby began from the age of one year, when she noticed her baby’s health condition, her paled face and her body turned abnormally. She did not know what to do to save her baby. There is no doctor in the area, no health worker or even a pharmacy to help her. Many other children in her village suffer of the same illness (malnutrition) as her daughter because of the very difficult economic conditions and the conditions of war and shelling that hit the region. The mother of Radhia heard of the reopening of the only health center which revived the great spirit of the mother. The mother and her daughter Radia reached to the center and were received by the medical staff who were given her baby girl a full care. The girl was examined and was placed on the child's weight machine. The caregiver stated that "the infant suffers from acute malnutrition and needs special care and continuous follow-up,". The doctor decided to give her the necessary dose of medicine and nutrition. "I used to go to the center twice a month. I made tests for the girl and received the treatment and nutrition needed for five months; [God bless all those working in the center]. "
The health center also provides outreach services for those remote domiciles who cannot reach the center especially children and women.
