The residents of Shibam district in Almahweet governorate were very pleased with good news of the opening of diarrhea treatment center (DTC) in Shibam Health Center - by the Yemen Family Care Association YFCA in the frame of project; Rapid response to the cholera epidemic in partnership with UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA. The residents were very happy with this achievement and hoped that they would get health services in their area and would not have to transport to health centers or hospitals far from their area for treatment and at high cost.
Since the first days for opening and operation of diarrhea treatment center (DTC) frequency tens of patients have begun their treatment and recovery trip, one of these beneficiaries; Mr. Ahmed Saeed Nasser al- Zaidi 60 year old, which works as a technician in the General corporation for water and sanitation, Shibam branch.
We went to his home to hear his story with cholera directly from him , He was gracious and very kind such as all the Yemenis, we started our meeting with him with a cup of tea then asked him directly for his story and suffering of his family with cholera.
“I suddenly felt diarrhea at that night with vomiting, I thought that it may struck me poisoning due to contaminated eat or drink” Mr. Ahmed Said.
Follow up to his talk, he encountered his illness announcement of emergency against cholera and efforts to the awareness raising by the team of health education and awareness of Yemen Family Care Association YFCA in Shibam District, these awareness helped him to guess that he may be infected with Cholera.
He also said: “I waited until the sun rises in the next morning to go directly to diarrhea treatment center (DTC) in Shibam Health Center - which are managed and run by Yemen Family Care Association YFCA – to meet the doctor and after the examination and tests, I was infected with cholera, here I was shocked, and felt fear of this disease”
“The medical team took me to isolation room directly and began giving me the treatment across the nutrients intravenous solutions, oral, I felt despair of my case, especially when I began to lose control of my body slowly, I felt that it will be last days of my life” Mr. Ahmed said.
Follow to Mr. Ahmed talk, he said, “The doctor came to me to reassure my health and raising up my power, He said that I did not have any other complications due to the fast of coming to the center”.
Mr. Ahmed finished his words saying “The medical team still giving me the necessary medicines, to restore my health, also giving me more information about cholera and the ways to its prevention and how to avoid it, all solutions, tests and treatment that I received at the center was delivered to all patients and me for free.
