Hamda, her children, and her mother are a displaced family who lives in a temporary shelter. It was obvious that their shelter was worn-out and it was not able to protect them from the summer heat or the winter cold.
Hamda stated, “Because we continued to live in this camp for a year and a half, and due to the lack of suitable shelter contributions, such as maintaining the quality of the shelter materials that had provided to us at the beginning of the displacement, our shelter has been destroyed and damaged and is no longer suitable for use.”
During a year and a half of displacement, Hamda faced many difficulties, being a widow means that she should take care of her children in all their lives aspects. Among these difficulties, her older brother was stricken with cancer. Therefore, and although she is suffering financially, physically and psychologically, she decided to take care of her mother to mitigate the burden from her brother. “After my brother’s illness, my mother got a heart attack which led to her getting hemiplegia. Now! I have to take care of her beside my children.” Hamda stated, “The treatment of my brother’s case cost us to sell everything we own, we were unable to provide my mother with an appropriate medication “ She added.
Currently, Hamda has a new responsibility on top of her previous responsibilities. “Taking my mother to the bathroom was a harsh difficulty, it affected my back pones. I am unable to carry her to the toilet anymore. Therefore, I provide her with diapers because it is easier than carrying her to the toilet. However, it added an additional financial burden to me.”
Yemen Family care Association (YFCA) targeted Hamda and her children with shelter assistance, within the fund of YHF. The assistance was consisting of a basic shelter bag that contained a carton of kitchen utensils, 2 buckets of water, a solar lamp, local wood and a burning stove. In addition to a shelter kit that contained mattresses and liners according to the number of the family members, and additional two mats. YFCA project team delivered shelter assistance to the family’s home.
“This aid has significantly mitigated my suffer,” Hamda said gratefully.
