The Global Handwashing Day is a global advocacy day dedicated to increase awareness and understand the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. The Global Handwashing partnership founded this international Day to give the world wide the opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times. Global Handwashing Day is celebrated every year on October 15.
Coinciding with global handwashing day, Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) celebrated this day at Eiadh School in Jardan district of Shabwah Governorate and organized a day full of activities focused on the importance of handwashing awareness for children school.
Creativity reigned, as girls and boys explored how to properly wash their hands at critical times to prevent diseases and save lives. Interactive theatrical performances, paintings, and songs dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap were performed with the curious audience at Eiadh School. After an eventful day, the children received small treats, soap bars, and handwashing-themed shirts, displaying step-by-step instructions on using water and soap to effectively to protect their health and thereby build our future well as those of our communities.
The Celebration included many educational activities such as drawing and coloring health messages about the importance of cleaning hands schools and the area around them, as well as displaying signs in schools urging students to wash their hands and apply acceptable health practices. Besides, practicing handwashing with soap was part of the pupils' culture and singing songs about the importance of hygiene and organizing some games and competitions on the same topic.
This activity was conducted under the framework of the ongoing project of WASH and humanitarian food assistance for IDPs, host communities, returnees and marginalized groups in six districts of Shabwah Governorate-Yemen, which is funded by German Humanitarian Assistance (AA) in partnership with Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH).
