YFCA is delivering specialized training for 24 beneficiaries in vegetable cultivation in Al-Dhale’e and Shabwah Governorate, as part of the agricultural livelihoods component of the Building Resilience through Integrated Community-Based and Humanitarian Systems Transformation and Leadership in Yemen (BRIGHTLY) Project, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The training focuses on strengthening participants’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and improving their ability to manage vegetable production from land preparation through harvesting, post-harvest handling and marketing.
Participants are introduced to key practices including site and soil preparation, selection of quality seeds and varieties, seedling production, appropriate planting methods, efficient irrigation and water management, soil fertility and fertilization, and integrated pest management. The training also addresses the safe use of pesticides and measures to protect food safety and the environment.
Beyond production, the training places emphasis on reducing losses and improving the value of agricultural products through appropriate harvesting, sorting, grading, cleaning, packaging, storage and transportation practices. Participants are also introduced to market requirements, pricing, collective marketing, and basic calculations of production costs and returns to support better economic decision-making.
Through this training, YFCA aims to help vulnerable households strengthen their agricultural skills, improve the quality and productivity of vegetable production, and develop more sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The activity forms part of YFCA’s continued efforts under the BRIGHTLY Project to strengthen household resilience and support vulnerable communities in developing sustainable sources of income.
