YFCA is providing specialized training to 42 beneficiaries in beekeeping in Al-Dhale’e and Shabwah Governorates, as part of the agricultural livelihoods component of the Building Resilience through Integrated Community-Based and Humanitarian Systems Transformation and Leadership in Yemen (BRIGHTLY) Project, funded by the UK, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
The training aims to strengthen participants’ technical knowledge and practical understanding of Good Beekeeping Practices (GBP), with a focus on effective apiary management, bee health, honey production and quality, and the economic potential of beekeeping as a livelihood.
Participants learn about selecting suitable apiary locations, managing bee colonies, understanding the roles and life cycle of honey bees, and managing colonies across different production seasons. The training also covers the identification and prevention of common bee diseases and pests, including Varroa, wax moth and Nosema, alongside measures for maintaining hive hygiene and applying preventive health management.
A key focus of the training is improving the quality and value of honey and other hive products. Participants are introduced to honey production and products such as beeswax, pollen, propolis and royal jelly, as well as practices for maintaining honey quality and food safety.
The training also covers harvesting, honey extraction, filtration, moisture measurement, packaging, labeling and storage, helping participants reduce losses and maintain product quality. Participants are further introduced to marketing, branding, attractive packaging, digital marketing and collective marketing, alongside basic production-cost and profitability calculations to strengthen the economic management of their apiaries.
Through the training, YFCA seeks to strengthen the capacity of vulnerable households to manage productive and sustainable beekeeping activities, improve the quality and marketability of their products, and enhance their livelihood opportunities.
