YFCA Participates in 5th Yemen Humanitarian Senior Officials’ Meeting
Wednesday, 24 May, 2023

The Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) was represented by its General Manager, Mohanna Eljabaly, at the 5th Yemen Humanitarian Senior Officials’ Meeting on May 23. Hosted by the European Commission and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, the meeting brought together donors, UN agencies, and NGOs to discuss joint actions to improve the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The meeting aimed to identify collaborative solutions for improving humanitarian access, enhancing the quality of aid delivery in Yemen, and improving coordination between development, resilience, and humanitarian actors. This is particularly important given that Yemen remains one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.

During the meeting, Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, urged all parties to guarantee unrestricted humanitarian access, emphasizing the importance of lifting restrictions and delays, especially those that harm the movements of female aid workers. In this regard, Mohanna, the General Manager of YFCA, highlighted the pressing issue of access challenges faced by national NGOs, specifying internal and external constraints, including bureaucratic impediments, lengthy approval processes for sub-agreements, and various access barriers faced by humanitarian workers.

Mohanna also emphasized the importance of addressing donor policies and restrictions that impede direct funding to national NGOs, financial constraints, and fundraising challenges, visa and travel restrictions for humanitarian workers, and the need for flexible funding and collaboration from international partners to leverage local expertise in Yemen.
YFCA's participation in the meeting highlighted the critical role of local NGOs in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Their on-the-ground experience and expertise are invaluable in addressing the complex challenges faced by affected populations. The Senior Officials’ Meeting was preceded by preparatory consultations with local NGOs and front-line humanitarian workers in Amman, Jordan on May 7 and 8, 2023.

YFCA stands united with its partners in the fight to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the Yemeni humanitarian crisis. The challenges faced by national NGOs in providing aid to affected populations in Yemen must be addressed, and flexible funding and collaboration from international partners are critical to leveraging local expertise and addressing the complex challenges faced by affected communities.
