YFCA implemented the first round of cash-for-work activities to improve living conditions and community resilience in Shabwah Governorate, Yemen. This activity is part of the BRIGHTLY project, a multi-sectoral initiative aimed at providing humanitarian assistance and sustainable development in Yemen, funded by FCDO
The cash-for-work activities included the construction of an irrigation channel with gates for water flow control in Al Juhraiba village, Bayhan district, and the installation of gabion barriers to protect agricultural lands from floods and erosion in Joul Al-Sheikh village, Mifaa District, Shabwah Governorate. These activities aim to preserve agricultural lands, protect rainwater sources, and improve agricultural productivity by providing sufficient water for irrigation. These projects have significant benefits for the local community in Shabwah Governorate, including improving food security, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing living standards by providing irrigation water to agricultural lands. Cash-for-work activities can empower vulnerable communities to earn income by engaging in the construction and rehabilitation of essential services and infrastructure, such as irrigation channels, barriers, roads, and schools. The role of such activities goes beyond supporting the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, as it also contributes to developing resilient systems capable of addressing future challenges such as droughts and floods.
