YFCA Conducts Training Sessions for Community Health Nutrition Volunteers in Al Dhalea Gov.
Saturday, 16 November, 2024

YFCA conducted  recent training sessions for Community Health Nutrition Volunteers (CHNVs) in Al Dhalea Governorate, specifically targeting the districts of Qatabah and Al Dhalea. A total of 33 CHNVs from Al Dhalea and 18 from Qatabah participated in the training. This activity is part of the  "Provision of Life-Saving Nutrition Assistance for the Most Vulnerable Groups" project funded by YHF.

The overarching objective of this project is to reduce morbidity and mortality among the crisis-affected population of women, girls, and boys in these high-priority districts. This initiative aims to ensure safe, equitable, and adequate access to lifesaving nutrition assistance at the health facility level, while also promoting Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) activities within communities.

These volunteers were equipped with essential materials, including Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) resources, registers, bags, and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape.As part of the effort to prevent acute malnutrition, the project includes the selection of a network of 99 CHNVs from the 2nd and 3rd catchment areas of targeted health facilities. These volunteers have been officially nominated by the General Health Office (GHO) and District Health Office (DHO) to conduct screenings, referrals, and awareness sessions.

To further support their work, the CHNVs will receive monthly hazard allowances for nine months throughout the project duration. Additionally, refresher training was provided for 51 CHNVs to enhance their knowledge of community-based nutrition services, including regular MUAC screenings for children under five (CU5) and pregnant and lactating women (PLW). The training will also focus on promoting the best practices in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), health-seeking behaviors, and hygienic practices.

Through these initiatives, CHNVs will conduct screenings to identify cases of malnutrition among CU5 and PLW, referring those in need to the nearest Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) or Targeted Supplementary Feeding Program (TSFP). Beyond their screening and referral duties, these volunteers will actively engage in health and nutrition awareness sessions in their communities.

This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen community health systems and provide vital support to those most affected by the ongoing crisis in the region.
