Ad-Dali', Yemen – In a significant move to address water scarcity, the Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) has successfully constructed water harvesting tanks in Al-Auwkima, Al-Azariq District, Ad-Dali' Governorate. This initiative is part of the Multi-sectoral Emergency Response project, aimed at supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities in Ad Dali’ and Shabwah governorates. The project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) in partnership with Diakonie-Katastrophenhilfe (DKH).
The intervention involved the construction of 12-cubic-meter reinforced concrete water harvesting tanks at the household level to collect rainwater during the rainy season. Each tank is equipped with a four-inch diameter piping system to channel rainwater from rooftops, an aluminum cover, faucets, plastering of the internal and external walls of the reservoir as well as the floor slab, a drainage pipe, ventilation pipes, and a pottery water filter distributed to beneficiaries to ensure water purification for safe drinking.

Objectives of the Intervention:
- Access to Safe Drinking Water: The initiative ensures access to safe drinking and domestic water for 36 households, providing a reliable water source during dry periods.
- Reducing the Burden on Women and Girls: By locating rainwater tanks near homes, the project reduces the burden of water collection on women and girls, who previously had to walk long distances to fetch water. This saves time and effort while improving their quality of life.
- Enhancing Children's Education: The intervention eliminates the need for children to assist their families in fetching water, allowing them to focus on attending school regularly.
This intervention is a vital step toward improving water security, public health, and overall well-being for vulnerable communities in Yemen. By providing a sustainable and accessible water source, YFCA and its partners are making a significant impact on the lives of those affected by water scarcity.
